Music freda's 'list file' feature: more versatile please.
Posted by: namitutonka - 06-26-2020, 12:20 AM - Forum: Suggestions - Replies (1)

I would like an option to freda's 'list view' to use, look, and act like Windows File Explorer (specifically the 'details' view of File Explorer), for two reasons. Firstly , though the current list view works very nicely and looks good displaying the ebook's cover artwork, freda's list view (for numerous books) takes a long while to scroll through. Secondly (for numerous books) it takes ages to select and then delete ebooks from freda's 'list view'. Without this feature, I have to keep deleting the few books I keep in freda's 'list view' in order to more easily purge a larger accumulation of ebooks later on.

Thank you for the freada ebook reader. It is  lightweight (low program disc space), fast, efficient, great viewing asthetics, and user friendly. Reading with freda, is better for me than Thorium,Adobe Digital Editions, or calibre E-book reader. The freda icon is nicer too. I looks like a green background musical score with the white forte symbol on top.     [Image: rainbow.png]  ƒ  [Image: music.png]

Life is a river, changing at the blink of an eye. Wink

  Change Log v4.34
Posted by: jim_chapman - 06-19-2020, 11:52 AM - Forum: Discussion - No Replies

Freda update 4.34, 19th June 2020: Change Log

  • When an SVG element specifies width and height in %, and it has a viewBox, then interpret the % values relative to the width and height of the viewBox.
  • Make table rendering more robust – don’t barf if some rows are shorter than others; retry layout in simpler ways if it fails first time.
  • The settings popup for font should, if ‘advanced rendering’ and ‘book style overrides Freda font selection’ are both set, include a message noting that this font will be overridden by the book’s font (and mentioning the possibility of adjusting ‘book style overrides Freda font selection’).
  • Fix lookup in the lexico dictionary, following the changes to their website.
  • (Android) When a glyph is missing from a font, use Noto Sans instead, or get the system to find us a font.
  • Make my background threads ‘long-running’.
  • (Android) change the behaviour of the settings screen so that it only applies the settings and repaginates the book when you tap ‘ok’ on the settings flyout. [because otherwise it’s very laggy when you start adjusting settings]
  • When reading aloud, include emphasis (note: the Android TTS engine appears to ignore emphasis anyway)
  • (Windows) – Implement a UI behaviour so that mouse-drag and finger-swipe are treated differently – i.e. mouse-drag always does select text, whereas finger-swipe may change pages, or select text, or be ignored.  This does seem like the sort of thing a user would expect.
  • Implement EPUB 3 CFIs for bookmark/location mark logic, and use it to define my bookmark & highlight locations in a portable way.
  • When a block element has a width property assigned to give it a narrower width than its parent, and has textAlign “right” or “center”, then move the block over so that it is aligned correctly.
  • (Android) BUG FIX: fix coding issue with deobfuscating embedded font files.
  • When a CSS @font-face declaration uses a number to specify a font-weight, interpret 500 and under as ‘normal’ and 600+ as ‘bold’.
  • Integrate Vungle advertising API and only fall back to AdsJumbo if Vungle has no ads for us.  (To think about later: Pubfinity, IronSource).
  • Improve handling of ‘v’ elements in FB2 books.
  • BUG FIX: ‘ERROR: MainViewModel.LibraryBookIdForURI - exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute.’ – which happens particularly when you download multiple books in one go.
  • (Windows) Revert to using the WebView-based code for SVG image rendering (the wieslawstoltes Svg.Skia library is not stable in production)
  • (Windows) Accessibility: implement an option to use a ‘keyboard accessible UI’ on the reader screen, using cascading flyout menus.
  • (Android) Use HarfBuzz shaper when rendering Devanagari text. (hopefully meaning we get ligatures right)
[UPDATE 22nd July: I've made a further update, to address some reported issues with books that had been open before the 4.34 update, and were now not displaying correctly.  The issue was caused by corruption of the app's cache files]

Lightbulb One problem and five suggestions
Posted by: fredafan - 06-15-2020, 08:35 AM - Forum: Suggestions - Replies (2)

Hello! Sorry for my English.

First of all, I want to say thanks to the entire development team and those who help to develop Freda! I have been using freda on a tablet with Windows 10 x64 for several years now, I switched from another program where there was a stupid restriction on the maximum font size (max 35pt, not enough for me) and not enough settings. I liked Freda instantly!

I want to report on one problem (№ 1) and offer some ideas. Current version is 4.33 UWP.

1. When reading books in fb2 several times I came across the fact that freda does not display text inside certain tags, for example:

<v>text in these tags is not displayed</v>
Probably some kind of filtering of unknown tags? Can you add <v> tags to the list of allowed ones and, for example, highlight them in italics?

2. In the settings parameter "page change motion", can you add an option for completely disable animation? Now I have selected option "none" that disables the animation with a single tap on the edges of the screen, but does not disable it when swapping right-left, up-down. Because of this, I can’t hold the tablet in my left hand and flip pages forward (animation interferes). I know that without animation there will be no visual change of pages, but I tried this method in another app and quickly got used to it.

3. In the process of reading a book, I sometimes get distracted to find out the current reading progress or current time (I have to call up the Windows taskbar). It would be nice to always see this information.
Now freda allows me to fix the area with the name of the book and the current position ("Ch. X / y, Pg. X / y") however I do not activate this function because
a) the area takes up extra space (reduces the number of lines of text in the book by one). I would like to see this area in the inside of the fields (which are set in the settings "border height").
b) The area cannot be customized according to the content. For example, I do not need the title of the book (I would prefer to remove the first line because the landscape option is selected and there are a lot of horizontal places), but the current reading progress and the clock would be very useful, maybe in the future it will be possible to add new useful parameters, for example, the battery charge.
c) The area cannot be customized by design, I would like to make it minimally noticeable (not distracting from reading): remove the background, change the color and font size.

Perhaps you will answer that in the settings there is a function "page number style", which adds information at the bottom of the page. I do not activate it because the number of lines of text is also reduced, and the font is the same as the main text (I have a fairly large 50pt).

4. Add the ability to disable the selection of text in the settings or fix the activation method. I never use text selection, but while reading when changing pages with a swipe left-right, the selection is often activated and very distracting. Although it seemed to me that it should be activated only after a long tap on the word.

5. Text search function. I would like to save old search queries (at least 5-10) so that I would not have to re-enter.

6. Function "Speed read". I am not a fan of this way of reading, but I tried it a couple of times and it seems to me that the original text in the background is not needed (because all attention is focused on the area at the bottom) and it would be better to stretch the bottom area to the entire screen, center the words and significantly increase font size (or add a second range element to select the font size)

How to check if Freda has latest update installed?
Posted by: iudragon - 05-27-2020, 09:20 AM - Forum: Discussion - Replies (1)

I think I saw a popup that Freda needs to update a day ago, Not sure.

Now that I missed it, how do I check for latest Freda version in the Windows 10 app?

The update was supposed to add Sentence + - feature to easily read aloud next sentence or previous one.

Thank you.

Problem connecting PC to OneDrive / Synching
Posted by: Mike K - 05-24-2020, 11:45 AM - Forum: Support - Replies (1)

Liking what I'm seeing in Freda so far

I have installed Freda on a PC (Windows 8.1 from the MS Store) and an Android Phone (running version 8.1.0 from the Play Store)
I have linked the Android phone to OneDrive, but When I tried on the PC, I was interrupted in the process, and failed to etner my credentials.
Under Sources - OneDrive  I now have the message "Sorry, I couldn't download from OneDrive. ..."
I right click on the box this message is in, and on the bottom of the screen the options to "Edit", "Logon" and "Undo"
When I click on Logon, nothing happens? What am I missing?

I have opened the Folders Source, and my OneDrive is also available on my PC under under that so I can add the books I have on my phone from there, but they do not appear to be synching with the places I have read to on my phone. I presume that the updating of where I have read to only works through the OneDrive Source?

I have both reset the application, and removed and re-installed it. To no avail.  Sad

Please advise  Smile

POPUP - Went away Before I Could Read It
Posted by: jwhitten - 05-17-2020, 02:16 PM - Forum: Support - Replies (4)

Today I started up FREDA and there was a popup I haven't seen before. I'm guessing it updated and was a Release Notes type thing. When I grabbed the titlebar to bring it over to my close monitor, the popup went away.

Is there any way to find out what the popup said?

  Can't import library
Posted by: ArchPrime - 05-13-2020, 10:33 AM - Forum: Support - Replies (2)

Hi, while initially downloading a collection of epub books from a folder, for me Freda always returns a “failed to download” error whether the source is a local folder or a network folder.

This is on Windows 10 tablet. Also tested on Windows 10 desktop, with same results.

A few books seem to get through initially then after maybe anything up to 20 or so are downloaded, a ‘download failed’ message is generated for an arbitrary book in the queue (after a long wait at that book), at which point the whole download process stops.

In Windows Explorer I can manually browse to and open that same book, and accessed this way, Freda opens it fine, and it also gets added to the Freda library – suggesting neither the file nor the path to it are the problem.

I can see that once that initially failed book has been manually opened from the source, the next one in the download list then automatically attempts to download, but always then it too generates a ‘download failed’ error, and the process stalls again.

There is also no way I can seem to clear all the remaining ‘failed to download’ books from the bookshelf, nor elegantly restart the queue once a failure has occurred.

The only way to attempt to restart the queue is to start it again from scratch, by adding the same folder again as a source.
The result when I try this is that the already loaded books are skipped, until the same arbitrary 'failed to download' book as last time is struck - so no progress is made - even though the book file/path themselves are always fine as noted.

Restarting the PC does not help.

While adding books individually/ one by one looks like it might work eventually, this is not a practical option for hundreds of books.

A possibly related issue is that, even though my OneDrive credentials are accepted, and there is plenty of free space, and I can access OneDrive in other ways,  from any PC Freda always reports ‘Bookshelf Synchronization:Cannot Connect to OneDrive’ (I still get the  'failed to download' issue even when OneDrive is not in use, so am guessing these OneDrive connection failures are not the cause of that issue - just a possibly related symptom)

Are these known bugs?

What are the best solutions?

How du I change the Freda website language?
Posted by: SveinB - 05-02-2020, 04:22 PM - Forum: Support - Replies (2)

I downloaded Freda today from the Windows Shop to my Windows 10 Desktop. The language on the website was Spanish, a language I do not understand, and I need to find the place where I can change it.

Read Aloud. Read Next/Previous Sentence feature.

Read Next/Previous Sentence Feature. This feature is available in MOON READER Android App to check for implementation. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...ader&hl=en)

Please let me know if this feature will be in roadmap or Freda or perhaps not. Thank You.
