Premium Features: Remove Advertising / Freda+
#1
On Windows, Freda is available in two versions, Freda+ and Freda.  The difference between them is that:
  • You have to pay to install Freda+
  • Freda displays advertising
All other features are the same; there aren't any special features that you get only in Freda+.

Nowadays (now that in-app purchasing works in Microsoft Store apps) there is no particular reason to install Freda+.  You can get exactly the same app functionality by installing Freda and then tapping the 'remove advertising' button to acquire the 'in-app purchase' that suppresses the advertising.  Indeed, I'd recommend that approach, because that way you get to try the app for free, before deciding whether to spend money on it.

One popular question, now that Freda is available on Android, is whether someone who's installed Freda on both Windows and Android will have to pay twice for removing advertising, once on Windows and again on Android.  The answer is "unfortunately yes"; this is because the two app stores are owned by separate firms (Google and Microsoft) and they do not cooperate on cross-store purchasing. Indeed, the T&Cs for the app stores actually forbid developers from selling app features anywhere other than the appropriate app store. Consider this scenario: I tell some Android app user that they can pay $1.99 for the 'remove advertising' feature for the Freda app in Google Play, and then I will provide that user with a magic code that they can enter into Freda on Windows to get rid of advertising on the Windows app too, without any further payment beyond what they already paid in Google Play. In that scenario, Microsoft will kick me off the Windows Store, because I've accepted payment, via some mechanism other than the Windows Store, for an in-app purchase in my Windows App - and this breaches their developer T&Cs.

I did check with Google and Microsoft, and their answers were basically 'lawyer says no'.

Hi Jim
I have been a long time user of Freda +, and have changed computers and windows phones several times in the many years I have been usung Freda. I recently bought yet another  new computer (Lenovo yogabook windows 10)   and tried to install Freda+ but the installation got stuck acquiring licence and failed to install.  I guessed this might be due to having too many installs, so I uninstalled Freda+ from one of my old computers, but this did not solve the problem.

Is there any limit to number of installations of Freda+ on the same Microsoft account, and can installation be transferred from one computer to another after the limit on number of installs is exceeded?
My Microsoft account says I already own Freda+ so I cant buy it again to install on the new computer.

I think Windows should give you a specific warning if you try to install an app on too many devices (too many is, I think, ten).  There is some more information here: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-manag...windows-10

Perhaps the problem with installing Freda+ is just that the Windows Store has got messed up on the Yogabook.  You may need to run the WSRESET.EXE program to fix it (search for WSRESET on the internet, and you should find various hints and instructions).

When I try to purchase the app in order to remove adds at the bottom, I get the message "This in-app purchase item is no longer available in freda" (see screenshot link below).

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I've run some checks, and the 'remove advertising' feature is still working in general - so there must be a problem that is affecting your particular setup. Please try running the Windows Store troubleshooter (in the start menu type 'troubleshooting', select 'Troubleshooting->View all', choose 'Windows Store Apps' and pick the 'Advanced' link, then check the 'apply repairs automatically' item and select 'next', and then follow the on-screen instructions).  And also try the WSRESET program mentioned earlier in this thread.

If, after that, it is still not working, please email me at jim@turnipsoft.co.uk, attaching the Freda log file (instructions are here: http://www.turnipsoft.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=5 )

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. The Windows Store troubleshooter brought to light that I am not properly signed in to my MS account, even though Windows display me as properly signed in. I signed out (local account) and back in, but the issue prevails. Will contact MS support tomorrow.

Thanks so far. Will revert again later.
