Freda on PC. Find function is nice, but it appears to only Find (the dialog box) indicated text forward, rather than backward as well, from the point in the book at which the function was initiated. Most users are going to want to refresh their memories as to how the text was used previously in the book, thus the need for the backward text references. Also, the Find result box is fine, except there's no reason not to make it a much larger part of the screen. It would also be nice to be able to set the number of characters around the Find text that is displayed, in Settings.

The latest version of the app includes a 'find' function that will show results from earlier, as well as later, parts of the book. Please take a look in the Microsoft Store, and see if you have an update available for Freda.

MS website says I have Freda+ installed. Version on my PC is 4.32. My find function only looks forward in books. What do the section numbers displayed indicate? Just the section numbers of the book from which the text references in the find function result list are found?

I mean MS store.
The search function, if it's working right, will find occurrences of the search phrase everywhere in the book. Ones appearing in the current chapter will be highlighted. Possible gotchas:
If you pick a phrase that appears a lot in the book, it won't display all of them.
It will scroll the list, to put the nearest hits at the top of the list. So to see earlier ones, you'll need to scroll the list (mouse-over it and use the scrollbar, or with a touch screen, drag the window contents, or with a mouse scroll wheel, turn the wheel).

It's not doing this. I "find" searched the last name of a character in the book from a point in the middle of the book. I knew the result list couldn't have included the first reference in the book to this character, because it didn't provide the usual descriptive material when a character is first introduced in a book. I verified this behavior by "find" searching from the beginning of the book, and in this case the result list did include the first reference to the character in the book.

And does the label "[incomplete: too many results]" appear below the search results window? If so, the problem is simply that you're searching for a term that appears too frequently in the book - which means that the program is behaving as expected, and not displaying all of a huge list of results. If that label doesn't appear, then it sounds like you've found a bug in the program, and I'd like to analyse that further - so could you email me at jim@turnipsoft.co.uk, sending me a copy of the book file, and giving some more detail on exactly what you searched for. Thanks.
Yes, the label appears. Perhaps an option should be added to the find function to search forward or backward, if that would allow viewing the first reference (backward search) of an item or character's name in a book. It would seem the need to view first references would be common, since it is the first reference to anything in a book where an introductory/full description is made of it. It's a common thing to forget the background/description of a referenced item, and to want to go back and refresh your memory of it.

It's a good point - I can see that, even if Freda can't display every occurrence of the search item (because there are too many), it would be good to prioritise including the first occurrences of the item in the text. I will look into this, for the next release.
