Display Tools with Touch While in Reading View
#1
Hello,

I am using a Microsoft Surface as a reading device and until the last update, holding my finger anywhere on the screen while reading would let me display every settings that was available while reading (return button, chapters, settings, how far I am in my book, etc.).

Now, I can't. I have tried holding and tapping with two fingers but the only way I found that involved touch was by adding the action specifically in the touch controls.

So, how do I bring back the old behaviour? Or, surely there is a *very* good reason for this to be gone? Otherwise, it would be nice to have this be brought back in the next update.

I changed this behaviour so as to make 'Freda on Mobile' and 'Freda on Desktop/Tablet' do the same thing in response to the long-tap action - and to make Freda's behaviour more consistent with other text processing and book reading apps.  The new UI logic is:
  • Long-Tap on a word => select the word and show selection handles; when tapped it will show the menu of things you can do with a word.  The final item on that menu is a 'tools' button that will pop up all the ribbons.
  • Long-Tap on blank space => pop up all the menus and ribbons

My reasoning is that it's confusing to show a screen-full of menus when the user is expecting to interact with just one little section of text (it's distracting, and can indeed result in the selected text getting obscured by a popup ribbon, which will make it even more confusing).

So the behaviour you want is still available - just long-tap on some area of the page that doesn't contain text (the margins round the edge will always work).  Also, unless you've customised it to do something else, the 'tap at bottom right' action will pop up all the menus and ribbons.

Yes, that was it. I had to either long press on the edge or long press in an area with no text for it to work. Thank you for the help.
