Hi, I purchased freda+ yesterday for my Windows 10 laptop and wanted to share a couple of suggestions:
1, UI Adjustment: It would be great if the vertical scrollbars in text boxes didn’t overlap the text on the right-hand side. This small tweak would make reading and navigation cleaner.
2, Feedback/Support Options: Could you provide a way to send feedback or contact support without relying on Outlook? I normally use a web-based email service, so even listing a support email address would be helpful. That way, I could send messages manually.
Overall, I’m really enjoying reading my EPUB books with freda so far. Thanks for the great app!

I am publishing a book, ePub reflowable 3.0. The normal contents via the hamburger menu works fine. However, for the printed contents page of the book, clicking on each entry brings up a box with an arrow that has to be clicked, rather than going directly to the linked page without this extra step. Is there a way to avoid this? Does it have to do with the type of links or anchors that I am using? Thanks

I am publishing a poetry book using ePub reflowable 3.0 format. Some of the poems have extra spacing between words to position them uniquely relative to other words, for visual effect.
I am using multiple entities to force spaces, which is working in other readers that I have tested it with (Adobe Digital Editions, Aquile Reader, Calibre eBook Viewer). However, Freda ignores the extra spaces and only renders one space between all words.
Is this by design, or do I need to use a different entity (such as nbsp) to make this work?
Thanks

This is the only Windows reading app that deserves attention but I think I've managed to break it somehow.
I was away for a couple of years, but came back this May, powered up my PC and Freda worked alright. Then I've changed motherboard+CPU and it has stopped working. It just does not start anymore. I click the launch icon and nothing happens — no new process, nothing.
I've found an advice to looks for logs in "%localappdata%/Packages/5957Turnipsoft.freda_ypmq2qh89vmny\LocalState\Freda" — and there's a "logfile.txt" there, but the last time it's been modified is before my CPU upgrade, at the time Freda worked. No matter how many times I reboot and try to start Freda again, this logfile does not get updated.
I know that the next advice is to remove the local cache and to reinstall the Freda app completely, but I wonder — is there a chance to avoid that? I have a couple books that I was reading, and I want to keep my progress.
When I did the CPU upgrade, I had similar issues with some of the other utilities I use. Can this be the reason for Freda not starting?
I'd be happy to provide any debug data you would need if you have the time to look into the issue.

OK:
Love the program, it's replacing the Kindle app on at least 4 devices.
Here's my question/problem:
so far, I am struggling to find the best settings to replicate the general kindle settings
(I did find [after 3 days] the Justified setting.)
Can anyone give a good list of what settings need to be changed, to provide my better half with an 'out of the box' Freda solution?
I would also recommend (and will eventually document [ for an faq/program change] what settings should be changed, and what a new preset could be created to mimic the default kindle settings (justified, black on white, font size, font style, etc)
Having a 'suggested Kindle preset' would be helpful to new users.
--> the program is SO,so powerful and versatile that it's initially overwhelming.
BTW, Kudos on the OneDrive, as well as the Calibre interfaces.
Another Suggested update:
in Calibre configuration:
The following was all done in the Calibre configuration menus:
After testing and verifying the calibre configuration worked as suggested:
- I changed the port from 8080 to 3005 (as close to BOOK) as I could get. (makes it harder to hack your calibre server)
- I also verified port :3005 was not on the pre-defined ports list.
- I also created two different id's WITH passwords, that we personally use
- One for regular usage (without write permissions) called regular-user (change to what you want to call it here) [example user1 or mark]
- A second id with write permissions, (NOT called admin or Superuser), but [example: user1-admin or mark-admin] if I wanted/needed to change my calibre library.
These small steps would increase the security of the Calibre/Freda interface, making the system more secure.
Hope this is helpful, the program is great, and full of potential!

Hello!
I have a few questions regarding highlights, annotations, and bookmarks. As I understand it, in Freda, it's possible to annotate, but that annotation is assigned as a bookmark. Highlights are purely visual and don't support notes. I don't quite understand why they are treated the way they are.
1. I often annotate multiple sections on a single page. Because annotations are treated as bookmarks, a bookmark icon appears to the left of each annotated section. It means that whenever I have more than three annotations on one page, it becomes close to unreadable because the icons clutter the text. If the selected text is in the middle of a paragraph, the word immediately before it also appears to be "annotated", and it's sometimes cofusing, especially when two adjacent sentences have different annotations.
Here are a few possible solutions, if you considered this as an issue:
a. move the bookmark icon to the margin, alligned with the line of the annotated text;
b. remove the icon entirely, or make it a toggleable feature in the settings;
c. allow highlights to support attached notes.
2. When selecting text on a PC (I'm using the hold and drag feature, though that may not matter), would it be possible to enable the pop-up menu (highlight, bookmark, annotate, search, copy, etc.) to appear automatically, without the need to click on the text again? Most apps seem to work that way.
3. It would be lovely to be able to add/edit colours of highlights/bookmarks, since some of them look can look odd in certain ink and paper colour combinations. Speaking of which, it would be great if there was a preview option when editing the appearance of the app/presets.
4. Would it be possible to let users add and save a custom dictionary for the "search" function? It seems feasible to implement, as long as users can provide the URL pattern. E.g., Merriam-Webster, which is used in Freda, uses the path of "https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/WORD". Collins Dictionary uses "https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/WORD". If users could input a custom URL path, could Freda support additional sites to search, provided they follow formulaic structures?
I also have a few other suggestions. I understand that UI might not be the highest priority while Freda is still under development, but I thought they are worth mentioning anyway.
1. It would be nice to be able to upload a custom background image.
2. I know that's kinda what presets are for, but I read both on my PC and my phone, switching several times a day. I have set different margins and font sizes, etc. for each device using two separate presets. Would it be possible for Freda to remember which preset is assigned to which device? The moment sync happens, preset is synced as well, and I have to change it manually (admittedly, it takes five seconds to do so, but it would be more convenient).
3. Why is it only possible to sort by "recent" and "title" when using the grid layout? And when using the stack layout, would it be possible to reduce the size of the sorting headers (A, B, etc.)? Right now, each letter takes up as much space as a book entry, which feels a little like wasted space (especially on mobile). Would it be possible to add autofill option when using "filter" on the bookshelf?
4. Would it be possible to show reading progress on the bookshelf view? I think it would be a nice touch.
5. It's something I've seen in Koodo Reader - there's a feature which allows the user to view all highlights and annotations across books in one place. You can switch to a "highlights" or "notes" tab, where everything is displayed in a sortable grid, including the book it came from and the date it was created. Clicking on an entry takes you directly to the place in the book. Would it be possible to add something similar to Freda? As of now, the user is only able to view their bookmarks in the book they are currently reading (it would also be lovely to make the bookmark window a bit bigger, because any annotations made aren't readable and cut off after the first word).
6. In the book view, only the book opened last appears. It would be great to be able to cycle through all of the books. I know I can just right-click and choose "info", but then why have a separate "book" tab, if the tab itself won't ever be used that way, but the "info" button on the bookshelf instead?
Sorry for the long post, and thank you so much for developing Freda! I love Freda as it is, these are just little tweaks that would make me love it even more

Freda update 5.3 is now being deployed. This release includes various bug fixes, and a transition to more up-to-date versions of various code components (which may mean improved stability, or may not). The major changes are: - (Windows) Added menu bar to main screen
- Switched to using Gutenberg for initial book list (because Feedbooks has been shut down)
- (Android) Improved full-screen mode
- Fixed issues with background images

I have my books all nicely arranged in my file system, with folders for fiction, non-fiction, subfolders for authors and subjects, etc. Is there any way to use Freda and take advantage of my already existing organization, and not waste disk space by making a duplicate copy in a different location? This seems SO OBVIOUS to me but i can't find a decent epub reader that does this. Ebookdroid is great, but is not supported on Windows. Cover for windows also behaves sensibly, but does not have full epub support. Can Freda do this somehow?
thanks!
